Soft Korean Steamed Egg (계란찜)

Preparation Time

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10–12 minutes
  • Total Time: 15–17 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup water (or anchovy/dashima stock for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 carrot, finely diced (optional)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for seasoning)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients
    • Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl and whisk until well combined.
    • Add water or stock, salt, and soy sauce if using. Whisk again until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Strain the Egg Mixture(Optional but Recommended)
    • Strain the egg mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove lumps, resulting in a silky smooth texture.
  3. Add Vegetables
    • Stir in the finely chopped green onion and carrot for color and texture.
  4. Cook the Steamed Egg
    • Stovetop Method:
      • Pour the egg mixture into a small heatproof bowl or pot.
      • Place it in a larger pot with about 1 inch of water, creating a double-boiler effect.
      • Cover with a lid and steam over medium-low heat for 10–12 minutes or until the egg is set.
    • Microwave Method(Quick Option):
      • Pour the egg mixture into a microwave-safe bowl. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a plate.
      • Microwave on medium power for 2–3 minutes, checking every 30 seconds to prevent overcooking.
  5. Garnish and Serve
    • Drizzle with sesame oil for added aroma.
    • Garnish with additional chopped green onions or a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Tips

  • For a fluffier texture, whisk the eggs thoroughly to incorporate air.
  • Adjust seasoning based on your preference, and experiment with adding other ingredients like zucchini or mushrooms.
